SMGL is on Hiatus :(
Posted by Dr Kus on Friday 29th October, 2010 at 8:31am

Fellow Gamers,

We are regretfully letting you know that for the current foreseeable future SMGL will be on hiatus. At present, we have no plans for any future LANs due to some hurdles that we are finding difficult to overcome in the business of LANing & Gaming.

We would like to thank everyone who has made the trek out to the Liverpool Catholic Club and joined in with the fun and games at SMGL events.

We hope that you can continue your passion in gaming and join in with some of the other local lans in Sydney such as SOGC, Battlefield Bargo, Fragfest & SGL. You will no doubt see us at some of these other events so come over and say hi.

A special thanks to Missingo for suppling switches and his gaming servers for us to use at SMGL. Without your help, SMGL would not have ran as smoothly network wise as it did. Thanks to the great supporters of our LAN, those of you who helped us setup the day and thanks again to SOGC for your great help and commitment in making our SMGL vs SOGC Battle of the LANs such a great event.

It is sad to be writing this final post, but hopefully we can come back again in the future.

Thanks Everyone!

SMGL vs SOGC - LAN vs LAN - 26th June 2010 - Liverpool Catholic Club

Thanks to all Gamers! Especially SMGL who pulled together to win the event!

SMGL lanners united to battle it out against our new LAN rivals SOGC to be crowned the LAN of LANs and raise the trophy up over our heads! 60 gamers attended the event with a few attending from SGL & Fragfest also!

It was a big day, full of competitions and prizes (despite steam bringing out game updates for CS & TF2). We also brought back the xBox 360 & Nintendo Wii on the projectors for more heated solo comps and a variety of PC comps which all went towards the end tally to determine the winning LAN of the event!

I would also like to give a big thanks to SOGC and their admins who put a lot of time and effort into helping us bring this great day together. Without them, the day would not have been such a success!

I have put together a time lapse video of the day. Enjoy!

SMGL #04 - Wrap Up
Posted by Wally on Monday 8th March, 2010 at 8:55pm

Thank you to all the gamers that made the trek out to SMGL #04 on Sunday. It was good to see you again, and also some new faces as well. We’ve put up photos from the day under “Photos”.

We were happy with how the day turned out, being a Sunday and all, but we put that behind us and got into some great Modern Warfare 2 gaming which worked very well without any hiccups!

Future SMGL LANs will no doubt include Modern Warfare 2, Flatout 2 which was a new appearance to the LAN and of course Team Fortress 2 and Grand Theft Auto 4.

Congratulations to the winners of the competitions
throughout the day:
Flatout 2 Mega Comp – Evans
Modern Warfare 2 (Free For All) – Grunt
Team Fortress 2 – Jaytee, Navillus
Lucky Door Prize – nightSHIFT

Our next LAN; SMGL #05 has been booked in for Saturday, June 26th. So please leave this day free in your calendars. We will be definitely bringing back Modern Warfare 2, Flatout 2, Team Fortress 2 for the next event, and even maybe some new games like Battlefield - Bad Company 2 and a Counter-Strike Comp for those who like painted cardboard boxes. Also we will see the return of the “free-sit and go” consoles.

So we’ve got a lot on the cards for the next event which will surely be one not to miss. We will keep you updated as we move closer to the LAN date.

We have also created a Steam Group for SMGL. You can join the group at:

Once again, thank you to all who showed their smiling faces on Sunday, we hope you enjoyed the LAN, and we look forward to seeing you next time.

Kind regards,
SMGL Admins.

PS: (If you’d like a photograph removed which you are in, please let us know)

G2Play - a Scam!
Posted by Dr Kus on Tuesday 23rd February, 2010 at 8:50am

Good evening Gamers! I am letting you know that before you think about purchasing from bewarned!!

I purchased a game from them a couple days ago and they sent me a duplicate CD key for steam. Unfortunately they are going against their "promt refund" for CD keys that dont work and havn't replyed to my email in 24 hours - " longer then the 30 minute reply they list on their homepage.

Yes they do sell games cheaper then steam but be aware that for the small savings you get for each game purchase it could bite you when one game doesn't!

i would like to know if any one else has had any issues with them in the past?

Under two weeks to go...!
Posted by Wally on Tuesday 23rd February, 2010 at 4:59am

Not long now until SMGL #04, infact, under two weeks to go!

We will update you soon with what we will be looking at hooking into throughout the day. Hopefully we can get some Modern Warfare 2 underway, TF2, some Grand Theft Auto 4 craziness, Call of Duty 4 and maybe even a reappearance of the XBOX360 (GRiD) or Wii Sports Resort.

Spots are still available, so if you have nothing better to do on a Sunday, make your way down to Liverpool Catholic Club for a day full of gaming with other gamers under the same roof.

The club offers great bistro-style food which you can have for lunch/dinner, though if you after some fast food grease, well it's only a 5min drive away. Free and "close to entrance" parking which is even patrolled by a lazy security guard in a golf cart, air conditioned rooms and a nice comfy atmosphere.

So stay tuned and we will update you with the plans for SMGL#04 shortly

Game On! SMGL #04 - Sunday 7th March
Posted by Dr Kus on Monday 8th February, 2010 at 10:20am

Happy New Year! & welcome to another fun filled year with many interesting gamin titles up for release in 2010.

SMGL has had a quiet past 3 months due to the Christmas rush and the Liverpool Catholic Club (LCC) being booked out with Christmas Parties.

As most of you are now aware, SMGL#04 will be held on Sunday 7th March as this is the earliest we can book the LCC. The LCC also doesn't want LAN’s on Saturdays as this is their best days for weddings and birthdays with guests are also paying for catering. Unfortunately this is a bit of a bummer for us as obviously Saturdays is better for everyone as we are able to game on till late and sleeping in the next morning. We already have reasonable interested attendees for the Sunday event so we will use SMGL#04 to see if it is a future alternative without having to find another venue.

On to gaming now! Modern Warfare 2, Left For Dead 2, Warhammer 40k II, Team Fortress 2, Boarderlands, Battlefield Bad Company 2 (5th March Launch), Alien vs Predator (20th Feb Launch) are just a handful of outstanding games that we would like to get underway at the SMGL #04.... and possibly Counter Strike Source for those who can’t leave their 1337'ness behind.

Our particular favourite is Modern Warfare 2!

This game is one that I’m sure most of you are all hooked on, as I know we are! We are quite looking forward to getting some high quality Modern Warfare 2 action happening at our next event!

Some final important things for this upcoming lan.

1 - We want to implement a time table, not for games in particular but more for set lunch and dinner times so that these meals aren't skewed out over 2 hour windows which reduces gaming time as half the teams leave for their meals.

2- All gaming will take place via steam or other legally installed methods. Please insure all games are up to date with the current patches and that you log your steam account into offline mode prior to the LAN. Please check that the game will run in offline mode.

3 - There will be a basic Internet connection for all to use on the network, though it will not be for downloading off the Intenet. It will be generally for checking emails, MSN chatting and so that we can log into steam to play Modern Warfare 2 which requires people to be online while playing at a LAN.

4 - We will most likely give the Nintendo Wii and XBOX 360 a miss for SMGL#04 as this seems to take a group of people away from the games also, well at least until SMGL numbers get higher so that the consoles don't effect PC game matches.

5 - The price at this stage is going to be the standard $25 entry fee. This does not cover food or beverages, but there is however very reasonable hot and freshly cooked food within the LCC which is even cheaper again if you sign up for a one year membership of $7.

6 - We are open to suggestions so please shout on the site or create a new forum topic for discussions about anything.

7 - We will have some basic PC supplies available for sale on the day for general items people tend to forget ie power cables, monitor cables, batteries, sata cables, etc

If you haven't replied to the most recent email (about the Sunday the 7th March SMGL#04) please do so, so we can predict how awesome the day is going to be.

Again, thanks to everyone that came out to SMGL#03 on Bathurst weekend, we hope you had fun. We want to make SMGL #04 as enjoyable as possible for you all.

MGN #03 Summary
Posted by Dr Kus on Friday 16th October, 2009 at 6:37am

Thanks to all 20 of you that made it out to Liverpool Catholic Club on Saturday for MGN #03. We hope you enjoyed the day as much as we did.

For the many of you that could not attend, MGN #03 saw the beta stage of an intranet interface that allowed all gamers a local place to chat, see all the game servers that were up what the map & mode that was being played and the number of people using it.

We also now provide free to use internet for everyone on the day for general web browsing, email checking, facebook and other chat programs. Due to the limited bandwidth shared between everyone there, things like updating your steam account, downloading game patches and streaming video is not possible. It is recommended to update your steam account and other games prior to attending the event. In the event you are unable to do so, please seek the updates from another lanner on the day.

Due to the limited attendance on the day, unfortunately we were unable to fund any competitions, as we did not cover the room hire.

Due to the Christmas season, all weekends are booked out for the year. We are looking to hold MGN #04 sometime in late January / early February.

Please respond to the email in the near future for your preference of MGN #04.

Things to look out for before MGN #04
Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising - Out now - Excellent 4 player Co-op mission based (which was great fun at the LAN) and up to 32 person multiplayer.
Left For Dead 2 - Out November. This is another fun Co-op mission based game. There is a great deal on at the moment to purchase 4 copies on steam for $139US (about $160AU between 4 people)
Modern Warfare 2 (Call of duty 6) - 10th November 2009. This will be the biggest hit of all for MGN #04 !!!

Again, thanks to everyone that came out, we hope you had fun, and if you have any feedback, please let us know as we want to make MGN #04 as enjoyable as possible for you all.

Thanks to those that have provided feedback, we will try to address as many as your requests as possible.

Our next event will see more servers continuously running throughout the day to hopefully get some more game time in COD4, TF2, Unreal Tournament and GTA4.

We will be bringing back the XBOX360 and Wii again for more jump on competitions.

Hopefully by MGN #03 we will be implementing an intranet so that everyone can chat, look at game servers and watch the count down timers to the upcoming competitions.

We will be looking into providing Internet mainly for checking emails, general web browsing and chat programs.

We will also have a public file server bay for lanners to plug their external hard drives in and download the required game patches instead of clogging up the networks.

Lan Update!
Posted by Kus on Wednesday 12th August, 2009 at 2:15am

Hey guys,

Not long to the lan now, 9 days!

We have come up with a special offer, groups of friends get a $5 discount or you can look at it as bring 4 friends and 1 gets in free as long as their are 5 or more of you!

We will be going off your "Team" on the lan registrations page, so get your friends to come along, add them to your team, create a team if you havnt already.

LAN registrations closing early next week!

We are going to have to close the lan registrations early next week as we need to hire tables for the event, and we dont want to hire tables that are not needed.

So if you are not yet registered for the lan, and you are coming, REGISTER NOW. If you have any friends that you want to come along, get them to come to the website, make an account, and get them to signup for the lan as when the registrations are closed we cannot allow any more people.

So get the word out!

Only two weeks to go until the MGN event, so get your gaming skills up to scratch and prepared for getting some frags!

A friendly reminder that we still have seats available, so if you haven't registered yet, please jump on the awesome list and grab your spot.

We will be finalising our servers next weekend, and will keep you posted on what will be running throughout day for you to jump in.

Also we will be looking at a couple of friendly competitions to spice up the day.

Registrations are OPEN!

For those that aren’t aware, registrations for our next event are open!

MGN #02 is only 24 days away!

Tell your mates and grab your seats today. Please note, that registering for the website, does not automatically register for the event. After creating your profile and logging in you will then need to register for the event.

Check out the Information page for details on what to bring, what’s planned for the day and what games we are looking at playing.

Spread the word, the more the merrier.

Do you have friends?
Posted by Kus on Wednesday 22nd July, 2009 at 12:14am

We want our LANs to run as smooth as possible, and for everyone to be able to sit with your friends!

So what we want you to do is create a "Team" and add your friends that you want to sit with on the day so we can reserve seating for you.

Click "Comps" from the navigation up the top.

Click "Create a Team" and then fill out the required information, and add your friends to your team at the bottom of the form.

Once you have made your team, click "Register Team" for this LAN.

You can add/remove friends from your team at any time if you are the captain, by going back to "Comps" and clicking "Configure My Team"

You can only add friends to your team that have registered on the website, so go ahead and tell them about the website and make your team!

I have uploaded the floor plan for the Liverpool Catholic Club so you can get an idea about seating. Click "Photos" from the navigation then "Venue" to view.
